If You Liked '42,' Here's the Real Jackie Robinson

42 is a rare movie — it’s really good and it crushed the competition at the box office last weekend. This film biopic of Jackie Robinson, the first African American to play in Major League Baseball, is superior to every other version of the story we’ve seen, but there was a movie made in 1950 that starred Jackie Robinson as himself.
Directed by the prolific Alfred E. Green, whose earliest films go back to the silent days, The Jackie Robinson Story is formulaic and conventional, but casting Robinson himself gives it historical importance. Look for Ruby Dee as Robinson’s college sweetheart.
Here’s the entire film, now in the public domain.
