Hector Hernandez: “Beyond Differences”

Beyond Differences

by Hector Hernandez

I believe that everyone is special in their own way, every human comes in different shapes and sizes, on top of that too, this even includes different types of personalities. Everyone should be accepted no matter who, or what they are. Whether they’re Black, White, Brown, Blue or whatever color is in the rainbow we need to learn to love each other. Whatever your sexual orientation is, everyone shall be accepted. Everyone needs to respect each other no matter what they like or who they like. Everyone needs to let others live in peace so they shouldn’t have to worry about going out to certain places where they feel as if they are going to be put down because of the color of their skin or who they’re with partner wise. Now, this is what I feel needs to be changed.

Although all schools are no longer segregated, that doesn’t mean that racism is no longer a problem. At least once in your life you are going to come across somebody discriminating against someone or yourself. I have witnessed it happening to somebody. It’s even happened to me. I’ve had people tell me “Go back to your country” multiple times. It’s happened so many times that it’s become normal to me. Nobody should feel as if that’s a normal thing to be told. I’ve even been told that I shouldn’t even be speaking “Mexican,” that I need to speak “American.” I believe that discrimination towards others is taught, and it is always going to inflict pain on people who don’t even deserve to be discriminated against. Why should we even erase something that makes us special? It shouldn’t be shamed; it should be embraced. I’m never going to stop speaking Spanish just because it makes somebody uncomfortable. That makes me who I am.

The same thing goes for the people of the LGTBQ community. Although it is now being accepted nationwide, the members of this community still face discrimination. I believe that love is love, no matter who it is with. Nobody’s opinion should make you feel like it’s not right to be with the person that you want to be with regardless of what they are or who they are. Discrimination comes in many different forms, but discrimination still strikes the heart of an innocent person causing them to be insecure about the way they are.

In conclusion, I believe that everyone should be treated equally regardless of race or sexual orientation, just like the podcast from “This I believe” named “Seeing Beyond Our Differences” said. We are all human at the end of the day, we all have blood running through our veins. We must all stand together to ensure that all people can love and appreciate one another because of our differences. That’s what makes us all unique, no one is different in a wrong way because either way at the end of the day, hate will never win.
