Mavis Staples: We Like the Things About Her

MavisCreditChrisStrong_20130408_111529Not much needs to be said about Mavis Staples, but we can’t help but gush a bit. With her bold new album, One True Vine, the legendary vocalist once again teams with Wilco frontman, Jeff Tweedy, to add a remarkable new chapter to a historic career. She’s a Rock and Roll Hall of Famer, a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award winner, a National Heritage Fellowship Award recipient and was named by Rolling Stone as one of the 100 Greatest Singers of All Time. Quite an impressive body of work that has culminated in this highly acclaimed new collection of recordings, which serves as a followup to the Tweedy-produced and Grammy-winning album from 2010, You Are Not Alone.
One True Vine released on June 25, 2013, with Tweedy handling all instruments except for drums, which his son Spencer plays. Here’s a small taste with the single “I Like the Things About Me,” a song written by Staples’ father, Pops, and Martha Stubbs.
