Petal by Petal

Petal by petal

Petal by petal, the year dismantles the rose.

Roll out the scarlet kegs of itching powder.

Let berries of bryony light the way to winter

And such bare truths as fallen leaves disclose.

The tilted earth drags summer to its close.

Thistles lay down their arms, unfurl their flags

of truce and stand dejected in their rags.

Petal by petal, the year dismantles the rose.
