Instead of thinking about the grand feast
of the chosen one and his disciples,
we should think about John the Baptist
eating wild honey and locusts
in the wilderness.
Instead of thinking about the crucifixion
we should think about the decapitation of John:
the crime based on the request of
a vicious noblewoman.
Instead of thinking about the holy lamb
and a pacifist,
we should think about his fierce relative
whose fate is familiar to many good men in the Bible:
the one who’s born first must serve the younger.
Instead of putting more time into those thoughts,
which did not make this world a happy place for everyone
– but turned Earth into the garbage bin, it is today –
we should celebrate John, who is
the model of modesty, sacrifice, and inner strength.
