The Fight Against Sedentarism

An inactive (or ‘sedentary’) lifestyle is associated with an increased risk of various health problems. These include heart disease, osteoporosis and even some cancers. Studies have found that even a moderate level of activity can make a big difference to your health, and vigorous exercise, such as playing team sports, helps you stay even healthier.

Exercise and Weight Loss

Deep down, most of us are aware that our cultural obsession with losing weight can be unhealthy. People (especially women) set themselves impossible targets for smaller body sizes. That’s where the idea of ‘size zero’ comes from: if the trend towards slimming down keeps going unchecked, logically, people would end up being so slim they cease to exist at all.

That’s not to say that losing weight is a bad thing. On the contrary, being overweight is associated with all kinds of health problems. Yet sometimes, the things people do to get skinny are almost as unhealthy as being overweight.

Losing weight almost always requires increasing your activity levels, in addition to making changes to your diet. At the end of the day, you can only lose weight if you expend more energy through your activities than you consume in your food. 

Exercise and Health

Nowadays, almost all people do a lot less exercise than they used to. Rather than labouring in the fields, many people spend their days behind desks. Rather than walking or horseback riding to get where they’re going, most people travel by sitting still inside some kind of moving vehicle.

Doing plenty of exercises helps you maintain a healthy weight, which in turn protects you against a number of health problems. It also helps prevent your bones from becoming brittle as you age. However, the stronger and more supple your muscles are, the less chance you’ll sustain injuries to your bones and joints.

Gymnastics, for example, requires athletes to develop incredibly strong muscles, which stands them in good stead later in life. Gymnasts typically remain strong and flexible way past the age when people’s bones and joints start to fail them. 

Final Thoughts

Team sports have traditionally been part of the school curriculum because playing team sports teaches children important skills and values. They learn how to communicate better, how to work as a team and how important it’s to be aware of the different points of view that different people have.
